Nichiren Shū Penang Buddhist Association
(Hok-kezan Ichinenji)
The Nichiren Shū Penang Buddhist Association serves as a spiritual home and community centre for followers of Nichiren Buddhism in Malaysia. Established in 1994, it is home to Hok-kezan Ichinenji Temple, the first Nichiren Shū temple in the entire Southeast Asian region.
We are a branch of Mahayana Buddhism dedicated to sharing the genuine teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha as revealed in the supreme scripture, the Lotus Sūtra. Our guiding philosophy is inspired by the wisdom of the revered 13th-century Japanese priest, Nichiren Shōnin.
Core Practice and Programs
Our community’s central practice is the sincere chanting of the sacred Odaimoku:
Namu Myōhō Renge Kyō
(Devotion to the Lotus Sūtra of the Wonderful Dharma).
In addition to this core practice, the temple offers a variety of programs designed to enrich spiritual life and introduce the practical elements of our tradition:
- Dharma Education: We hold classes and study sessions focused on the Lotus Sūtra and the teachings of Nichiren Shōnin.
- Cultural & Wellness Programs: We host unique temple programs such as Shodaigyo meditation, singing bowl sessions, and Matcha tea ceremonies to cultivate mindfulness and appreciation.
Mission and Community
We believe that this spiritual practice, which aims to activate the inherent Buddha-nature within all beings, leads to individual well-being and contributes directly to the peace and harmony of the wider society.
The Association also actively participates in local Buddhist festivals and events, including the annual Wesak Day Parade in George Town. Join us as we strive to cultivate peace and joy through the eternal truth of the Lotus Sūtra.
